Herbie Hancock “Chameleon”
from Head Hunters (Columbia 1997) —I just finished reading an entire book about this album - review to be written soon. At any rate, I love it even more now.
Sly & The Family Stone “You Can Make It If You Try”
from Stand! (Epic 1969) —So the last track just stopped two thirds of the way through and then this one started - I don't understand, but at least it's still funky.
Curtis Mayfield “(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go”
from Curtis (Rhino 1970) —My friend Said mentioned on Facebook the other day that he needed to hear some Curtis Mayfield - that made me need to hear some, too.
Free Energy “Free Energy”
from Stuck on Nothing CD Album (Caroline 2010) N —This was a recommendation from a faithful listener - I'm sorry, I didn't write down your name and I can't access that e-mail here. But it's got lots of great cowbell.
The Sights “I'm Going to Live the Life”
from The Sights (New Line 2005) —Another great band playing Beat 'n' Soul tomorrow - and an acoustic set at Euclid Records at 4 pm.
The Coal Porters “Roadkill Breakdown”
from Durango (Prima 2010) N —I imagine they sing on the other songs, but this short instrumental is a lot of fun.
David Ball “Hot Water ipe”
from Sparkle City (Red Dirt 2010) N —Poor David Ball - he had a giant country hit (Thinkin' Problem) right at the tail end of the time when such honky-tonk material could win the country audience. He keeps making good records, but always on tiny labels.
