Bryndle “Corn, Water & Wood” from Bryndle (Music Masters www.thebuckhannonbrothers.com 1995) —This group should have been superstars, Wendy Waldeman, Karla Bonoff, Andrew Gold, & Kenny Edwards, the last 2 have died within the past year. Wendy and Carol Elliott wrote this Indian christmas song.Buy it!
Chuck Brodsky “The Great Santa Snowball Debacle of 1968” from Tulips for Lunch (chuckbrodsky.com records www.waterbug.com 2006) —Chuck Brodsky writes the best baseball songs ever, here he tackles football, the true story of the fans turning on Santa in his home town of Philly, sounds like Philly fans to me.Buy it!
Kasey Chambers “Return Of The Grievous Angel” from STORYBOOK (Liberation Music 2011) —On my top 10 list (check it out at kdhx.org) Kasey nails the Gram Parsons classic, one of 15 of her musical influences she covers on this wonderful cd.Buy it!
Michael Fracasso “Saint Monday” (Michael Fracasso 2011) —Another of my top ten picks, first cd of original material from Michael in 7 years and well worth the wait, Michael co-produces with Jim Lewis, Patty Griffith joins in.Buy it!
Robyn Ludwick “Out of These Blues” from Out Of These Blues (Late Show Records 2011) —Another top 10 favorite, and my pick for the most under the radar release this year, Robyn out does brothers Bruce & Charlie Robison on her new one produced by Gurf Morlix, who seems to produce all the Texas music Lloyd Maines doesn't.Buy it!
Tom Russell “Goodnight, Juarez” from Mesabi (Shout Factory 2011) —Another top 10 pick, Tom's ode to the tragedy that is Juarez, a place he dearly loved and can see from his home in El Paso. Calexico, Gretchen Peters, Barry Walsh, and accordian master Joel Guzman join in.Buy it!
Bonnie Koloc “25th Of December” from You're Gonna Love Yourself In The Morning (Ovation 1974) —A vinyl rendition of this great seasonal tune from Bonnie who never went on to recieve the universal notoriety of her male Chicago counterparts.Buy it!
Steve Goodman “Colorado Christmas” from Unfinished Business (Red Pajamas Records 1987) —Hard to believe that Steve's been gone 27 years (I always think about the great music he would have made and we've missed) most energetic live performer I've ever seen, loved him despite the fact that he was a cub fan.Buy it!
John McCutcheon “Christmas In The Trenches” from Winter Solstice (Rounder www.rounderrecords.com 1984) —Great Christmas tune based on a true story, isn't it much better when we just get along, John has visited my hometown Mt. Olive to play at the Mother Jones Monument.Buy it!
June Tabor and the Oyster Band “The Dark End of the Street” from Ragged Kingdom (Topic 2011) —You wonder why it took these folks 21 years to get together again, a great take on this oft covered Chips Moman / Dan Penn classic.Buy it!
Shackleton 3 “Blue And Wonder” from Just Turning Pages (Croxton 2011) —A wonderful side project from Aussie singer/songwriter Mick Thomas, joined by Liz Stringer and Anna Burley, Liz & Mick duet here on a Richard Buckner song.Buy it!
Terry Allen “OLD FRIENDS” from This One's For Him, A Tribute to Guy Clark (Icehouse 2011) —Truly one of Guy's oldest friends, Terry picks the perfect song for Guy's amazing 70th birthday tribute. Guy's at the Old Rock House, leap day 2/29/12Buy it!
Eliza Gilkyson “Colorado Trail” from Dark River: Songs of the Civil War Era (Blue Corn 2011) —Wonderful cd of Civil War era tunes by some of Austins best, Eliza adds a couple verses to this standard, Slaid, James McMurtry, Rich Brotherton, Warren Hood, Terri Hendrix, Jimmy LaFave, & Jon Dee Graham are just some of the other contributors.Buy it!

Cowboy Junkies “Clothes Line Saga” from Garth Hudson Presents a Canadian Celebration of The Band (Curve Music Inc. 2010) —Another from my top 10 Michael & Margo Timmons cover the Bob Dylan tune from the Basement Tapes, great all Canadian tribute cd put together by the Band's keyboard wiz.Buy it!
The Trishas “RISE ABOVE” from They Call Us the Trishas (The Trishas 2010) —Debut cd from this all girl quartette featuring Kelley Mickwee, Jamie Wilson, Savannah Welch (Kevin's daughter), and Liz Foster who wrote and sings this tune, can't wait for more from these gals..Buy it!
Blackie and The Rodeo Kings W/ Pam Tillis “My Town Has Moved Away” from Kings and Queens (FU:M 2011) —Another top 10 from my list, Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing, & Tom Wilson with 15 dynamite duets from some of the best female singers on the planet.Buy it!
Jim Croce “IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY” from The 50th Anniversary Collection (Saja Records 1973) —Want to feel old, then 30 year old Jim Croce was killed 38 years ago, left behind a musical legacy including this Christmas classic, were outta here, thanks Rich, tune in next week for a Songwriter Showcase ChristmasBuy it!
