Billy Clark & The Maskman “Soul Party Pt. 1”
from Dynamic Grooves (BGP url 2011) N —Washington DC soul from 1968 released by the Dynamo label & found on this new compilation of songs released by various New York independent labels. This track was written by Harmon Bethea (aka The Maskman) & Billy Clark.
Tony Alvon & The Belairs “Sexy Coffee Pot (Single Version)”
from What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves (1967-1977) (Rhino 2006) —Music bed. 1969 soul & funk instrumental recorded for Atlantic at Virtue-Stiles Studio in Philadelphia.
Spooner's Crowd “Two In The Morning”
from The Fame Studios Story 1961-1973 (Kent 2011) N —1966 instrumental written by Spooner Oldham (who plays piano & organ on this), Albert Lowe & Roger Hawkins and recorded for the Cadet label. Produced by Rick Hall. One heck of a cool instrumental and one I've never heard before.
The Memphis Horns “Soul Bowl”
from What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves (1967-1977) (Rhino 2006) —Music bed. 1970 soul & funk instrumental written by Wayne Jackson & Andrew Love and released on the Cotillion label.
The Rolling Stones “Claudine”
from Some Girls [Deluxe Edition] (Universal Republic Records 2011) N —New reissue of their 1978 release with an additional disc of some original outtakes & some recently completed in 2011 by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Don Was. Mick Jagger waxes poetic about Claudine Longet in this one.
Harry Nilsson “Everything's Got 'Em”
from The Point! (RCA 1970) —There will be a Harry Nilsson tribute this Sat. (11/26) at Off Broadway with Ransom Note, Edward Burch, John Krane, Tommy Halloran, Brian Wiegert, Dock Ellis Band &“The Point” narrated by Sherman S. Sherman & members of Rats & People.
Dean & Britta “Incandescent Innocent”
from 13 Most Beautiful: Songs For Andy Warhol's Screen Tests (Double Feature Records 2010) —Music bed. 2010 instrumental written to accompany an Andy Warhol short film.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings “In Tall Buildings”
from A Tribute to John Hartford (Blue Plate Music 2001) —Found on this 2000 live recording of various artists performing John Hartford songs such as Norman Blake, John Cowan & Tim O'Brien. This live recording also features John Hartford performing some of his own songs, as well.
Aimee Mann & Michael Penn “Reason to Believe”
from Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska (Sub-Pop 2000) —I think this tribute to Bruce Springsteen is one of the strongest tribute albums out there. Usually, they are really spotty affairs. It helps when you have artists such as Johnny Cash, Raul Malo, Chrissie Hynde & Son Volt taking part.
Bob Reuter and Kamikaze Cowboy “After the Party”
from Down in America (Magoo Records 2000) L —There will be a Bob Reuter book release for his latest collection of photos called 'Light Fuse and Run' at Off Broadway this Sunday from 3-7PM. As an added bonus, Alley Ghost & Doom Town will be performing.
