Brother Smith and His Stars of Harmony “God Don't Take No Vacation”
from This May Be My Last Time Singing: Raw African-American Gospel on 45RPM 1957-1982 (Tompkins Square 2011) N  —Gospel funk out of Chicago recorded circa 1972 for the Valberst label. Found on this new highly recommended 3-CD compilation featuring 72 rare independent gospel 45 tracks.

O.V. Wright “I'm Going Home (To Live With God)”
from Memphis Unlimited (Backbeat 1973) —Traditional gospel song with backing by the Hi Rhythm section & production by Willie Mitchell. Oh, and with a fantastic soul vocal by O.V. Wright and backing vocals by Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes.


Jimmy McGriff “The Last Minute”
from Jimmy McGriff's Greatest Hits (Blue Note 1997) —F 9 Music bed. 1964 instrumental written by Jimmy McGriff.


Trombone Shorty “Then There Was You”
from For True (Verve www.vervemusicgroup.com 2011) N  —This track features the searing vocals of Ledisi on a song she co-wrote with Troy Andrews (aka Trombone Shorty) among others. Another really strong release by the New Orleans artist.

Nick Lowe “You Don't Know Me At All”

Robbie Fulks “That Bangle Girl”
from The Very Best of Robbie Fulks (Bloodshot Records www.bloodshotrecords.com 2000) —Appearing at Off Broadway in October (Sun 10/16). Willy Porter is also on the bill. Should be a fine show.


The Blind Eyes “Hold Down the Fort”
from With A Bang (self-released 2011) N L —Just voted Best Pop Band - 2011 by the Riverfront Times. This song about St. Louis was written & sung by Seth Porter.


PJ Harvey “The Last Living Rose”
from Let England Shake (Vagrant www.vagrant.com 2011) N  —Another one of my favorite songs from 2011. This song is not likely to be used by the England Tourism Board anytime soon. PJ Harvey plays sax on this track.
