Carla Thomas “Heavy Load”
from Sweet Sweetheart: The American Studios Sessions and More (Ace/Concord 2013) N  —Carla Thomas recorded eleven songs at American Studios with Chips Moman in 1970 for an album that was never released until its inclusion on this new compilation which also has twelve unissued Stax recordings. She sounds wonderful on this Free cover.

Bettye LaVette “Bettye LaVette”
from Souvenirs (Art Soul 2000) —12 songs were recorded at Muscle Shoals in 1972 for an album. However, the first single tanked so Atlantic never released it. The album and 6 bonus tracks eventually made it on this French compilation-Written by Ron Davies and covered by David Bowie.

Barrence Whitfield & the Savages “I'm Sad About It”
from Dig Thy Savage Soul Single (Bloodshot www.bloodshotrecords.com 2013) N  —Barrence Whitfield just goes kind of Screamin' Jay Hawkins-like nuts on this Lee Moses cover. If you've seen this band, you know it will even be better live.

Black Joe Lewis “Come To My Party”
from Electric Slave (Vagrant www.vagrant.com 2013) N  —Alright, I'll never claim that Black Joe Lewis is much of a singer but this one will definitely get the party going. Nice groove from the Austin-based band.

Lee Moses “Time and Place (single version)”
from Time and Place (Castle 2007) —Atlanta soul track recorded in 1970 for the Front Page label. Now, that's a soul vocal. I went with the single version as opposed to the album for one simple reason. The bongos are less pronounced.

The Sugarman 3 “Dirty Water”
from What the World Needs Now (Daptone 2012) —Music bed. Sublime instrumental version of the Standells song.
