from Black America Sings Lennon & McCartney (Ace 2011) —1967 soul Beatles cover recorded for the Loma label and arranged & conducted by Jerry Ragovoy. Found on this 2011 24-track compilation of Lennon-McCartney songs performed by various soul and R&B artists.
The Five Stairsteps “Dear Prudence”
from Wecanworkitout (Harmless 2005) —This soul version of the Lennon-McCartney composition was recorded in 1970 for Sequel Records. This Chicago soul band later signed to George Harrison's 'Dark Horse' label.
Esther Phillips “Can't Trust Your Neighbor With Your Baby”
from Performance (Kudu 1974) —Breaking new ground here on M2M by playing a cheating soul song. Written by Isaac Hayes & David Porter & found on this new reissue of her 1974 album.
Darondo “I Don't Understand It”
from Listen To My Song (Omnivore 2011) N —From Darondo's lost album, recorded in the Bay Area in 1973-74 & just released for the first time. This track was written by William Darondo Pulliam & John Al Tanner.
Shelby Lynne “Heaven's Only Days Down The Road”
from Revelation Road (Everso Records 2011) N —Produced, written and performed by Shelby Lynne & found on her new release which just came out this week.
Mayer Hawthorne “A Long Time”
from How Do You Do (Universal Republic Records 2011) N —Song written in tribute to Detroit by the Ann Arbor artist & found on his new release. Mayer Hawthorne & The County will be opening at The Pageant for Chromeo this Monday (10/24).
The Temptations “Cloud Nine” (Gordy 1969) —Written by Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield and destined to be played for decades to come.
Dennis Coffey “Don't Knock My Love”
from Dennis Coffey (Strut 2011) —This Wilson Pickett cover features the vocals of Fanny Franklin (of Orgone). Orgone & Lubriphonic will be appearing at the Old Rock House on Halloween (Monday 10/31).
Joe Henry “Odetta”
from Reverie (Anti- 2011) N —Written & produced by Joe Henry & found on this recommended new release. Also features some nice background vocals by Jean McClain.
The Webb Sisters “I Need You”
from Harrison Covered (Mojo 2011) N —Beautiful version of the George Harrison-penned song found on this compilation CD of various artists performing George Harrison songs which accompanied the November, 2011 issue of Mojo magazine.
Ben Folds “Late”
from Songs for Silverman (Sony 2005) —2005 song written about Elliott Smith. Ben Folds will be playing with the St. Louis Symphony at Powell Hall in November (Sunday 11/6).
Son Volt “Last Minute Shakedown”
from Straightaways (Warner Bros. 1997) L —Jay Farrar will be appearing at The Sheldon Concert Hall this Friday (10/21). Bobby Bare, Jr. is opening. Highly recommended.
Coulson, Dean, McGuinness & Flint “Lo and Behold” (Airmail Archives 1972) —1972 release of Dylan songs which the band learned from circulated bootlegs. Many of these songs had not been released by Dylan, yet, & this release marked the first time many people heard these Dylan compositions.
The Byrds “The Times They Are A-Changin'”
from Turn! Turn! Turn! (Columbia 1965) R —I had a request for this Dylan song. Hopefully, this 1965 cover version sufficed.
Nick Lowe “Sensitive Man”
from The Old Magic (Yep Roc 2011) N —From Nick Lowe's recommended new release. That opening set for Wilco was just a teaser. Let's bring him back to St. Louis to headline next time.
