The Records “Girls That Don't Exist” from The Records / Shades In Bed (On The Beach 2002) —What a nice thing to find on the shelf at the station, a 20-track compilation of this great band that's been out of print forever.Buy it!
Magazine “Do the Meaning” from No Thyself (Wire-Sound 2011) N —It's not the classic Magazine line-up - for thing, John McGeogh passed away - but it actually sounds worthy of using the band name again. This is the only song I've heard so far, but I like it.Buy it!
Lindsey Buckingham “Seeds We Sow” (Eagle Rock 2011) N —Check your local listings, but I think there's some recent Lindsey Buckingham concert being shown on the Palladia channel these days (possibly even today).Buy it!
Justin Townes Earle “Wanderin'” from Harlem River Blues (Bloodshot www.bloodshotrecords.com 2010) —Every time I hear this one, I double check to make sure it isn't really some old Woody Guthrie song he dug up. It's that good.Buy it!
John Doe “Giant Step Backward” from Keeper (Yep Roc 2011) N —The best song on Doe's new record. It took me three weeks to remember which cut it was, because I've only heard the album at work, and I kept being distracted from checking which number on the CD player it was.Buy it!
Carla Thomas “Yesterday (live)” from Stax Does the Beatles (stax 2007) —I love this arrangement, with the horns and the piano flourishes, and Carla pushes her vocal prowess as far as it will go.Buy it!
Harry Nilsson “Daybreak (45 version)” from More Cowbell For More Cowbell (Rich Reese) —I'm thinking it will be a good time at Off Broadway tomorrow night when some of St. Louis' finest pay tribute to Nilsson. I hope they have a cowbell ready.Buy it!
Etta James “That's the Chance You Take” from The Dreamer (Verve Forecast 2011) N —Etta gets by on guile and innate rhythm and musicality - she ain't what she was, but she's still Etta James, and that means it's worth hearing.Buy it!
Elvis Presley “Suspicious Minds” from From Elvis in Memphis (RCA 1969) —Oh Lord, I hope this one doesn't count as "That song." (Me, I say if it's a good song, I'll play it even if there's a danger you heard it before).Buy it!
The Dells “Stay In My Corner” from 20th Century Masters: The Millenium Collection - The Best of the Dells (Chess 2000) —Six minutes of tingling up and down the spine.Buy it!
JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound “I Got High” from Want More (Bloodshot www.bloodshotrecords.com 2011) N —A tough song to resist - these guys will be at Off Broadway on Dec. 10, and at Euclid Records earlier that afternoon.Buy it!
Paul Motian Trio “Monk's Mood” from One Time Out (Soul Note 1990) —The great jazz drummer Paul Motian passed away the other day, a major loss in music. His trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano was always a great showcase for Motian's particular gits.Buy it!
Loudon Wainwright III “Had To Be Her” from Here come the choppers (Sovereign Artists 2005) —From my fave of all Wainwright's great records, the one with Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, and Jim Keltner in the band.Buy it!
Sam Bush “Circles Around Me” (SUGAR HILL ww.sugarhillrecords.com 2009) —I've always said Sam Bush is the greatest mandolin player in the world, but now I've seen Chris Thile play, and that means there's at least a tie. Anyway, this is a lovely song.Buy it!
Alison Krauss & Union Station “Dust Bowl Children” from Paper Airplane (Rounder 2011) N —You know, Dan Tyminski is a terrific vocalist in his own right - I love his take on this Peter Rowan song.Buy it!
Tom Waits “Talking At the Same Time” from Bad As Me (Anti- 2011) N —I'm convinced this is the best record Waits has made since Frank's Wild Years. Yep, that was a long time ago, and there have been some good ones since, but this album is inspired.Buy it!
