Lee Fields “Faithful Man” (Truth & Soul Records 2012) N —Shades of James Brown abound on this leadoff & title track off his new release which just hit the stores last week. This song killed live when he performed it at SXSW last week.Buy it!
Johnnie Taylor “We're Getting Careless With Our Love” from Taylored In Silk (stax url 1973) —Written by Don Davis (who also produced the album) & Frank Johnson with the rhythm tracks recorded at Muscle Shoals. A trio of cheating soul songs to put you in a M2M frame of mind.Buy it!
Elaine Brown “Until We're Free” from Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1967-1974 (Light In The Attic At The Firebird on 2/1 W/ Roky Erickson! 2012) N —From the soundtrack to the book with the same title written by Pat Thomas. Written by Elaine Brown who was heavily involved with the Black Panther Party from 1968-1977.Buy it!
Homer Banks “The Ghetto” from Change Is Gonna Come: The Voice of Black America 1963-1973 (Kent 2007) —Previously unissued 1968 Stax demo recording written by Homer Banks, Bonnie Bramlett & Bettye Crutcher. The song was later covered by Delaney & Bonnie and The Staple Singers.Buy it!
Barbara Lynn “I'm A Good Woman” from A Good Woman: The Complete Tribe & Jet Stream Singles 1966-1979 (Kent 2011) —Written by Barbara Lynn and released on the Tribe label in 1966. What a pleasure it was seeing a full set from Barbara Lynn in Austin last week.Buy it!

Garland Jeffreys “The Contortionist” from The King of In Between (Big Lake 2012) —Stones-influenced track written by Garland Jeffreys & found on his highly recommended 2011 release. His set at SXSW was one of the absolute highlights for me.Buy it!

Neko Case “Nothing to Remember” from The Hunger Games (Songs from District 12 and Beyond) (Universal Republic 2012) N —Previously unreleased Neko Case song found on this movie soundtrack for 'The Hunger Games' which just came out this week.Buy it!
The Belle Brigade “Sweet Louise” from The Belle Brigade (Reprise 2011) —Written by siblings Barbara & Ethan Gruska who happen to be the grandchildren of composer John Williams. One of very best sets I saw at SXSW last week.Buy it!
Chuck Prophet “After The Rain” from No Other Love (New West 2002) —Duet with Chuck Prophet & Stephanie Finch. Chuck Prophet is appearing at Off Broadway tonight (Thursday 3/22) with The Jans Project opening. I put this in the "crazy if you miss this show" category.Buy it!
Woodenbox With a Fistful of Fivers “Everyone Has a Price” (self 2012) N —Scottish band with members from Glasgow & Edinburgh and one of the biggest unexpected surprises for me at SXSW last week.Buy it!
Linda Ronstadt “I Won't Be Hangin' Round” from Sounds From The South: At The Crossroads Of Rock, Country and Soul (Soul Jazz www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/ 2011) —Written by Eric Kaz & recorded at Muscle Shoals in 1971. Merry Clayton is one of the background vocalists on this.Buy it!
