The Staple Singers “(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay”
from Soul Folk in Action (Stax Records url 1968) —Really great interpretation of the soul classic written by Otis Redding & Steve Cropper (who also produced the album). Sung by Mavis Staples who just turned 73 on Tuesday (7/10) and is still touring like crazy.
The Jacksonians “Vehicle”
from Lost Soul Gems From Sounds of Memphis (Kent 2012) N —Slow, soulful re-working of the Ides Of March hit found on this compilation of rare tracks from the Sound of Memphis label, including previously unheard titles (like this one) found recently on tapes & acetates.
Esther Phillips “I Saw Me”
from Behind Closed Doors: Where Country Meets Soul (Kent 2012) N —Originally recorded by George Jones in 1962. This intense version was recorded in 1965. I've said it before but I have to think that Janis Joplin heard a lot of Esther Phillips recordings. She sure sounds like a major influence on Janis Joplin to me.
Renee Acker “If I Had a Magic Wand”
from If I Had a Magic Wand 45 single (The Numero Group 2012) N —I have a subscription series with The Numero Group and this 45 single came in the same shipping carton as a pop compilation of bands out of Illinois. All I know is it's a soul pop track I like recorded for the Edgewood label (Wash. DC).
Dean and Britta “Silver Factory Theme”
from 13 Most Beautiful ... Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests (Double Feature 2010) —Music bed.
Fiona Apple “Every Single Night”
from The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (Columbia 2012) N —Appearing this Saturday (7/14) at the Peabody Opera House.
Woody Guthrie “Jesus Christ”
from Woody at 100: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Collection (Smithsonian Folkways 2012) N —"This song was written in New York City / Of rich men, preachers and slaves / Yes, if Jesus was to preach like he preaced in Galillee / They would lay Jesus Christ in his grave."
Old Crow Medicine Show “Union Maid”
from Big Iron World CD Album (Nettwerk Records 2006) —Written by Woody Guthrie. They will be appearing at the Pageant next Friday (7/20). Remember Just One Big Soul: Woody Guthrie 100th Birthday Party, Tribute and 88.1 KDHX Benefit at Off Broadway this Saturday (7/14).
