Time zone: central
Bob Dylan “Baby Stop Crying”
from Street Legal (Columbia 1978) —The more I hear Street Legal, the more I wonder why it hasn't been elevated higher in the pantheon of Dylan classics.
Penelope Houston “White Out”
from Cut You (Reprise 1996) —Some remember her as the vocalist in San Francisco punk band the Avengers, but then she turned into one delightful melodic popster.
David Bowie “Sound and Vision”
from Low (Virgin 1999) —David Bowie, Brian Eno, Berlin. That works.
Janiva Magness “Thought I Knew You”
from Stronger For It (Alligator 2012) N —How to turn a Matthew Sweet song into bluesy soul. She's in town tonight at the Old Rock House. See you there.
Van Morrison “These Dreams of You”
from Moondance (Warner 1970) R —The control in his voice on this one, his dynamics, just make it work so perfectly.
Paul Simon “Paranoia Blues”
from Paul Simon (Columbia 1972) —A rare case of Paul Simon jumping out of his comfort zone as a singer - he belts out some of these lines with a blues authority he almost never assumes.
Willie Nelson “Hero”
from Heroes (Legacy 2012) N —Too much of this album is a let down, because Willie makes too much room for his son to sing with him. But on the title track, he makes room for Jamey Johnson & Billy Joe Shaver, who can stand in his company with pride.
Karate Bikini “Smuggler's Nightmare”
from Sauce of the Apple Horse (self 2012) N L —These guys are playing next Saturday at the Heavy Anchor with the Vondrukes - that's 2 of my fave St. Louis bands on the same bill, at the Heavy Anchor.
Like everything else, times are approximate.
