'The Past' is passé in more ways than one

Too bad the title "It's Complicated" went to 2009 film starring Meryl Streep and Steve Martin, for the title could be a generic. It certainly applies to "The Past," which depends on revelations, each one more complicating than the last. "The Past" is a mystery wrapped in a soap opera.

'Populaire' reinvigorates traditional romance

For years, French films have carved out a niche in presenting very personal stories about the ups and downs of intimate relationships. "Populaire" falls into that category with the added quirk of central character, secretary Rose Pamphyle, training for the 1959 high-speed international typing competition. The romance with her boss Louis Échard is as thoroughly old-fashioned as the manual typewriters.

Impressively executed and immensely entertaining, The Artist charts the fading career of silent film star George Valentin juxtaposed with the rise of new discovery Peppy Miller. In a strong supporting role native St. Louisan John Goodman plays director Al Zimmer. This gorgeous black-and-white homage to silent film takes place in Hollywood from 1927 to 1931, the transition to talkies.
