The film's title tells the tale: "Lone Survivor," but that revelation doesn't begin to convey the intense, gut-wrenching Afghan war mission of the four SEALs featured. Seldom has a film so powerfully thrust the viewer into the violent action, communicating desperation and determination as well as dedicated brotherhood. This makes the tragedy that unfolds all the more horrific.

The good news about "Closed Circuit" is that neither its cloaks nor its daggers are cliches. The plot does not depend on justice prevailing but on reality reigning, so it is more cynical than triumphal. "Closed Circuit" is about terrorism and secrets, duplicity and circuity.

‘Deadfall’ is dead on arrival

Relying on ludicrous coincidences in a predictable, badly written story, “Deadfall” offers sociopathic criminals fleeing across snowy Michigan for the U.S.-Canadian border. A sure sign of a lack of depth, about every fifteen minutes an expendable character gets shot or a sex scene intrudes. Nothing really works; it’s lame and superficial and dull.
