Upon entering the parking lot of the Firebird Friday night, there was an unexpectedly large amount of people, and a long line that reached clear out the door and into the lot.
Young people packed the Firebird to hear two much-hyped indie bands: Geographer and Freelance Whales.
Truth be told, I went to the Firebird last night to see Freelance Whales, and not the headliner, Foals. What can I say? I like Foals, but I'm a sucker for a banjo. But getting down and dirty with Foals changed everything for me. The whole night rocked.
Foals played a sold-out show at the Firebird on Saturday night. Freelance Whales and the Naked and the Famous opened the bill.
Developing a reputation for collecting and performing with unconventional instruments (see glockenspiel), Freelance Whales spins variety into texture, and irregularity into eclecticism -- not an easy feat. The five-member band from Queens, N.Y. met rolled into KDHX for a live session.
