Sad to say, it just doesn't work. "True Story" doesn't even seem to try very hard to make a true story on screen as thrilling as it must have been in life. So true it may be in terms of plot, but true it is not in terms of art.

Based on Jordan Belfort's book charting his rise and fall, "The Wolf of Wall Street" recreates the wild ride through the 90s of this penny stock trader, soon multi-millionaire never bothered by ethics. Leonardo DiCaprio's tour-de-force performance drives the film from work at a Wall Street corporation to a shabby office to his own Stratton Oakmont Long Island firm.

Moneyball's behind-the-scenes drama is a terrific companion piece to the World Series' on-the-field excitement. Based on the real-life experiences of Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane, Moneyball asks tough questions, especially how to compete against the wealthiest teams. And it finds answers as creative as Beane's 2001 solution to having an operating revenue one-fourth the Yankees' budget, for one example.
