Picking a bone

Though one of the goopier spin-offs from the Peanuts comic strips declared that happiness is a warm puppy, the musical named for the little beagle doesn't ladle out as much saccharine and sentimentality as does its predecessor, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. In that regard, Snoopy!!! The Musical strikes me as truer to the strips. Cartoonist Charles M. Schulz never did allow Charlie Brown to kick that football. Life's disappointments and embarrassments always loomed large in Charlie's life.
