Austin quartet Heartless Bastards delivered a thundering set Tuesday night at the Firebird.
The Firebird was barely a quarter-full when St. Louis' Tenement Ruth took the stage at 8:30 p.m. A couple dozen people, mostly older males, were scattered along the back wall near the arcade machines and sound board.
While some exceptions could be made for background, I'm willing to bet that for a lot of people, being a fan of Tom Waits from a young age was a lonely feeling.
