St. Louis Shakespeare's Magic Smoking Monkey Theatre company once again strikes gold, this time with "Cannibal: The Musical," a hilariously twisted homage to the classic Hollywood musical written by Trey Parker, half of the creative team behind "South Park" and "The Book of Mormon." Cannibal tells the ill-fated story of a group of miners who met their demise on the trail to Colorado gold.
They say the 2011 musical “The Book of Mormon” is crude and funny and, judging from the tour at The Fox Theatre right now, it certainly is. But what you hear less often is how very smart and well-constructed it is. Anybody can be a smart-ass. Being a smart-ass with a little heart is more difficult, but this show pulls it off.
Of course the man who would create a cartoon about foul-mouthed kids and who would think that a musical about Mormon missionaries in Africa could find a place on Broadway would be inspired to create yet another musical by one of those incidents of cannibalism among lost stragglers through the frozen Rockies.
