Song of the Day: 'The Tower' by Wye Oak

Never content to repeat themselves, the duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, aka Wye Oak, venture into fully-synth (and cello and guitar) powered, fully-danceable dream pop on "The Tower," a track from their forthcoming album "Shriek."

Tuesday night at the Pageant, Wye Oak and Dirty Projectors unfurled a melodically-intense evening of wildly different but still complimentary musical styles.

Somehow this was the first show in St. Louis for Dirty Projectors over their decade of existence, but David Longstreth and his crew made up for all that time with a stellar performance at the Pageant.

Wye Oak opened the show last night at the Pageant with an indie rock sound best described as less is more. Performing with only two members, drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack and vocalist/guitarist Jenn Wasner managed to make up for a lack of band members with intense musicianship and a string of dreamy hooks.

Wye Oak 6/16/08

With heavily reverbed guitars and occasional string accompaniment, Wye Oak conveys deeply melancholic, yet strangely uplifting sentiments.
