What would would you like to share with KDHX listeners and readers about yourself?
I'm 57 years old, married for 34 years with 4 kids and 4 grandkids. Born and raised in New Jersey before moving here in 1994 due to the high cost of living back east. I love sports, especially hockey and football (American and Canadian), cooking, and Stephen King books. The Stand is my all time favorite.
Please describe the inspiration for your show.
As a boy growing up, music was a big part of my life. My mom would play her LPs on the console stereo that weighed like 500 pounds. Artists like the Grass Roots, Elton John, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, etc. At night in my room I would listen to my transistor radio and was fascinated that I could pick up CHAM out of Hamilton, ON. During the day it was WABC and WNBC, the 2 big A.M. music stations out of NYC. Harry Harrison was my favorite DJ on WABC, and I knew I wanted to do THAT when I grew up.
Why does being a KDHX DJ matter to you?
Personally, it's my dream come true. I always wanted to be in broadcasting and gave it a shot when I was younger, but it didn't work out. So when I discovered KDHX was looking for volunteers in 2002, I jumped at the chance. In January 2004 I went on the air with my first show, Medication, which featured a lot of '80s new wave, power pop, and newer bands that had that '80s feel like The Killers, The Stills, and Franz Ferdinand. By 2008, I was running out of ideas for the show, so I changed over to the Interstate in August of that year, and here we are. What I really love is being able to share music that is rarely heard on commercial radio, and having full creative control of my show. It's pretty awesome.
Why is KDHX important to you and to your community?
Stations like KDHX are very rare nowadays, and I feel very privileged to be a part of it. So many great programs with every kind of music imaginable. I rely on the concert calendars to keep me up to date on who's coming to town, and the Earthworms podcast is terrific. All this with no commercials!
What are some of your favorite KDHX shows?
Rocket 88, Midday Jamboree, Down Yonder, World Disco Adventure, Rolling Thunder, Folks of The World, Hindsight, Juxtaposition, Tangazo, Music at Work, just to name a few!
What record do you think everyone should have in their music library?
On Every Street by Dire Straits. It is sublime.
Favorite thing you are listening to at the moment?
The new Nick Gusman & The Coyotes album "Lifting Heavy Things". It's everything that is great about the St. Louis Americana scene.
