Art Marks from Minnesota and Montana to the Confluence: Watershed Cairns by Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan

The Bonsack Gallery opens Art Marks from Minnesota and Montana to the Confluence: Watershed Cairns by Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan with a reception on Friday, February 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Artists Reuter and Rowan have collaborated since 2011 on a project they call Watershed Cairns — large-scale color photographs of glass sculptures placed in watersheds throughout the Mississippi-Missouri river basin. Reuter, a sculptor and installation artist, creates reliquary-inspired glass “cairns” constructed from household or antique glass; each piece is made in response to a specific site. Because the cairns are too delicate to keep in place, Rowan photographs them to record their presence in the landscape. The artists display most photographs on watershedcairns.com, along with a short description and GPS coordinates, so viewers may visit the sites themselves and note changes in the landscape and the rivers over time. The work also appears in galleries and museums, with many cairns displayed with their corresponding photograph.

So far, Reuter and Rowan have traveled to more than 300 locations in the Missouri-Mississippi basin. Their project aims to “mark the watersheds metaphorically as fragile, beautiful, and deeply connected to everyday life,” and to spark community discussions around water. The artists’ current series focuses on Mississippi River basin’s water wealth: the river provides drinking water for 50 million people and irrigates 90 percent of the United States’ agricultural exports.

The exhibit runs through April 10. The Bonsack Gallery is a not-for-profit educational gallery on the campus of John Burroughs School. Regular gallery hours are 8 am to 6:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
