Common Ground

Join us in contributing to Common Ground, a new, participatory exhibition celebrating the opening of COCA’s expanded Ferring East Wing led by artist, Olanyiyi Akindiya.

Common Ground is a place to be together in this moment: an opportunity for us all to forget our differences, what positions we hold in society or any of the other cultural forces that push us apart.

Common Ground is designed not only as an exhibition, but also as an ongoing collaboration with the community. There is work by the artist throughout COCA to inspire visitors to see, think, discuss, decide. The heart of the exhibit is made of modular, interchangeable pieces that symbolize the human form and are easy to manipulate. Each visitor can choose to add, move, or take away any element, creating an ever-evolving visual dialogue throughout the course of the exhibition. It will be built in by the visitors, in constant flux. The modular human figures become the tools for all of us to tell our new stories of today and what we hope tomorrow should give birth to. This piece gives us the chance to rewrite the wrong, to understand we cannot do anything about what has happened, but we can make tomorrow a better place for the next generation. Resiliency lies in us coming together to honor and celebrate our differences.
