Saunders Schultz: Visionary Abstractions

Saunders Schultz (1927-2017) was a prominent St. Louis artist and among the founders of the concept of Architectural / Environmental Sculpture. He was cofounder of Scopia Studio with fellow St. Louisan William Severson (1924 - 1999), and contributed to nearly 300 monumental works over his career; these diverse sculptures are found throughout St. Louis, in 37 states, and around the world.

This focused exhibition presents examples of drawings, paintings and sculpture that illustrate Schultz’s affinity for nature as his primary inspiration. The drawings and paintings in this exhibition reveal the complex ways in which Schultz captured the shapes of leaves, trees, flowing water, and in some cases capturing the concept of rushing air. Despite their small size, these pieces still convey the grace, complexity, and monumentality of the site-specific works for which Schultz is known.
