Historically Speaking: Summertime Gardening

Before the glorious tour of 26 historic sites and their picturesque landscapes on June 15th, Historic Saint Louis is hosting a botanical speaker evening on Tuesday, June 4th.  

Esley Hamilton, preservation historian for St. Louis County Parks and Recreation for 38 years and landscape architecture instructor at Washington University in St. Louis for 21 years, will speak about landscape history in St. Louis.  He will describe how exceptional landscape designers over the last two centuries have beautified our neighborhoods, parks, institutions and private properties.  

Carol Gravens, retired microbiologist and St. Louis Master Gardener and Naturalist, will talk about the interconnection of plants and human existence, as detailed in Bill Laws’ book, Fifty Plants that Changed the Course of History. She will focus on how plants affect our daily lives as food, shelter, fuel, medicine and clothing.

The Summertime Garden Speaker Evening is presented by Historic Saint Louis as a complementary event to their Painting a Summertime Past.  The botanical speaker evening is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
