“Mormonising” Political and Religious Dissent in Nineteenth-Century Missouri

The Field House Museum is partnering with the Missouri Humanities Council to bring you Stephen Davis as part of our Speaker Series. Davis, a former assistant US attorney and Mitt Romney’s election law counsel for the State of Missouri, will be presenting: “Mormonising” Political and Religious Dissent in Nineteenth-Century Missouri." This program will focus on how Missouri officials handled what they called a “Mormon Problem” in the 1830s and how the same officials would later handle slavery and abolitionists.

Please RSVP in advance as space is limited.

About the Speaker: Stephen S. Davis is an attorney with True North Law Group, LLC, a law firm specializing in property rights and election law litigation. After graduating from the University of Missouri–Columbia Law School, he became the sixty-second elected Chief Clerk and Administrator of the Missouri House of Representatives. Steve then served as an Assistant United States attorney in St. Louis. He left that position to become Mitt Romney’s election law counsel for the State of Missouri. Steve chaired the Missouri Bar Committee on Citizenship Education and is the recipient of the Missouri Bar’s Solomon Civic Virtue Award. He lives with his wife and four children in St. Louis.

Making the Connection: Roswell Field was a compassionate person who believed in simply doing the right thing. Although he is most well known for his work on the Dred Scott case, he also helped two young Mormon girls, Temperance and Mercy Westwood, after their family perished in the 1849 cholera epidemic by providing them with positions in the household. The two girls eventually saved up enough funds to continue on their journey.
