David Johnson, Destiny Mata, and Bridget Murphy Milligan at the Foundry Art Centre

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITIONS OPEN AT THE FOUNDRY ART CENTRE

June 4 – August 22, 2021

The Foundry Art Centre is pleased to announce the opening of three solo photography exhibitions. David Johnson’s It Can Be This Way Always, Destiny Mata’s The Way We Were, and Bridget Murphy Milligan’s Wondertales: The Imprint of Child’s Play.

It Can Be This Way Always documents David Johnson’s ongoing, 13-year photo series of the Kerrville Folk Festival in Central Texas – an annual 18-day event that has been in existence since 1972. Johnson’s large-format photographs capture a distinctive subculture that emerges within an isolated 5-acre ranch through portraits of the festival-goers and the Texas Hill Country.

Destiny Mata’s The Way We Were showcases the underground punk scene of the outer boroughs of New York, specifically Punx of Color, whose shows are held to help financially support the fight for civil justice. In an ever-changing world, these photographs recall a not-so-distant past when the underground punk scene was alive and well and living in color.

Through fanciful color photographs, Bridget Murphy Milligan’s Wondertales: The Imprint of Child’s Play celebrates the spirit and complexity of childhood, investigating the inventive play and uninhibited curiously of children. The compositions offer inspiration for the viewer to reconnect with their inner child, recalling early childhood memories and experiences that leave permanent imprints on the consciousness.

“There is a fascinating connection between these three exhibitions,” explains Sean FitzGibbons, Executive Director of the Foundry Art Centre, “Mata’s The Way We Were and Johnson’s It Can Be This Way Always both document events centered on live music. Each music scene may be about as regionally different as you can get, from the urban landscape of New York to the rural camp grounds of the Texas Hill Country; however, there are immediate similarities showcased within the shared sense of community built around the love of music. Murphy Milligan’s images present a wonderful foundation as her work highlights the childlike sense of imagination that ties all three exhibitions together.”

Exhibitions open June 4th with an opening reception from 5-8pm. Exhibitions at the Foundry are free and open to the public. Social distancing and mask wearing is enforced.
