Talk: Case Studies in Provenance Research at the Kemper Art Museum

Tracing an artwork’s ownership history—or provenance—involves detailed detective work. Researchers examine markings and labels, study archival sources, and track down exhibition histories and literature. Learning about how artworks have changed hands over time can provide insight into moments of political and economic transformation and larger cultural attitudes. In this talk, Heather Read (PhD18) presents her research into the ownership histories of selected works from the Kemper Art Museum collection, as part of the 2018 AAMD / Kress Foundation Provenance Research Fellowship.

Free and open to the public.
