Taking Account(s): Witnessing as an Act of Care Workshop

As anthropologists, Alyssa James and Brendane Tynes are especially adept at conducting interviews. The medium of the interview, however, is fraught with the colonial histories of knowledge extraction, and always troubled by the uneven power dynamics implicit in the interviewer-interviewee relationship. How then might the interview be transformed from a tool of knowledge gathering into a moment of co-experience and community-building? How might researchers, journalists, activists, public servants, and community-members conduct interviews which are not only productive and informative, but also generative and reciprocal? How can the sharing of information be made also to become a radical act of care?

This 2-hour virtual workshop will define and complicate our notions of "care" by focusing on Black feminist practices of interviewing. Together, we will model novel approaches to interviewing and offer practices of care that align with the themes of homemaking and community-building.
