Poetry at the Point - November 19 with Melissa Singleton, Emily Koehn, and Sunni Hutton

POETRY AT THE POINT on November 19 will feature poets Melissa Singleton, Emily Koehn, and Sunni Hutton. Poetry at the Point is held at THE FOCAL POINT in Maplewood. This reading series invites local and regional poets, and established and up-and-coming poets to share their words. The event is free.

MELISSA SINGLETON, also known as Shine Goodie, is a poet and change-maker with the heart of a shaman. Her specialty is the art of gathering and conversation in her creative work, but also in the literal sense of bodies gathering around other bodies, human and nonhuman—especially along the contours of the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Memphis to New Orleans and back where she has curated art and poetry events and happenings for over a decade. Her poetry insists and depends upon intimate, other ways of knowing and being in the multiverse.

Goodie House, Shine’s monthly literary event, celebrates connecting through our shared humanity and our glorious differences. Check out goodiehouse.org for more information.

EMILY KOEHN’s poems have appeared in FENCE, Waxwing, Crazyhorse, Cincinnati Review, and Vinyl. Her work has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes and Best New Poets.   She earned her MFA from Purdue University and an MSW from University of Houston. Emily is originally from Hot Springs, Arkansas, and lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with her husband and daughter. She is the St. Louis Poetry Center site coordinator for Poetry Inside Out, a poetry translation program, and teaches at Washington University.

SUNNI HUTTON, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, is a St Louis native. She is the author of The Art of Hurting, a poetry photo book. She is a spoken word competition winner. Her writings are the whispers of wisdom and intuition, and lead her to develop self awareness. When she’s not writing, she's nourishing spirit, body and familial relationships through dancing, laughter, and Imo’s pizza.

The Focal Point is at 2720 Sutton.  Parking is free in the lot on nearby Marietta Avenue or street parking. Readings start at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments available at the Maya Cafe next door.
